My Fishing Story – Standa Pečený
From the river behind my house to the endless flow of the Elbe

Today we introduce Standa Pečený. His fishing journey did not begin with trophy fish or chasing records, but with the river that literally flowed behind his house. His story is rooted in a bond with the water, with nature, and with his grandfather—the one who first led him to fishing.
My Fishing Story
I grew up literally on the banks of the Ploučnice River, which flowed through our garden. You could say fishing is in my blood—my parents often joke that I was born with a rod in my hand. Yet in our whole family, it was only my grandfather who fished. He was known more as a poacher, but for my sake he eventually got his fishing license—he said he was afraid he’d have nowhere to take me otherwise. (That part I only know from stories. What I do remember is that from my earliest days, he was the one who led me to the water and to nature.)
Thanks to the river behind our house, I had unlimited opportunities to try every fishing technique. I started with a float and a pole, then moved on to ledgering and spinning, but what I loved most was fishing “na vyvěšenou”—a long rod, a duck feather float, and the bait right beneath my feet. That was my true passion.
But over time, the Ploučnice started to feel “too small” for me. In 1999, when I was eight years old, my grandfather took me to the Elbe for the first time. And something changed. From that very first moment, I knew this would be a lifelong journey.
Since then, I’ve been going to the Elbe constantly. Just like on the Ploučnice back in the day, I tried every possible way of fishing here too. But for the past six years, I’ve devoted myself fully to carp fishing—specifically fishing with boilies.
For me, the Elbe is more than just a river. It’s the place where I grew up as an angler, where I’ve gained my experience, and where I’m still searching for new challenges. And it’s this very journey that drives me forward—to new experiences, stories, and adventures by the water.
Standa is not just an angler chasing big carp on the Elbe. He’s someone who can turn his journey into a story—and it’s thanks to voices like his that Specimen Hunter has true meaning.
