The River That Never Sleeps
The Story of Jihlava Begins
It’s early morning. Mist rolls through the valley, quietly arching over the water’s surface. The air is cold, but not harsh. It’s the kind of chill that doesn’t push you away—it draws you closer. Along the bank, a track stretches—not human, but familiar. An otter, maybe a fox. Perhaps both. Here, in the bend beneath the forest, no one has been yet today. Only the river. And the river never sleeps.
Jihlava
On the map, it seems ordinary. Just another Czech river. But only until you bow to it. Until you listen to how it breathes, how it flows. Until you understand that it carries a whole story – not just about water, but about the land, the people, the fish that live within it. And about you, if you choose to join it.
A Landscape That Remains
Jihlava rises in the hills of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, in a quiet landscape of mossy forests and streams. From there, it carves its way across the Vysočina region, cuts through towns, flows down valleys and slowly, with the elegance of an old lady, heads south.
But unlike other rivers, it has kept something wild. It isn’t fully regulated. It doesn’t want to obey. In some parts it twists like a snake, elsewhere it crashes into rocks and runs with a current that can surprise you even in summer. And it’s in these places that its true magic lives.
Wildness that didn’t vanish. Nature that endured.
Water that holds life
The Jihlava is a unique river. It contains all the fish zones we know – from trout to bream. That makes it a rarity in the Czech Republic. It means you can find almost every fish species native to our waters. And not just the “common ones”, but even those you’ve been searching for for years.
Brown trout in the upper reaches. Grayling where the water sings. Barbel holding to strong currents like a warrior. Zander rising from the depths at dusk. Perch, tench, chub. The majestic catfish. And sometimes even a carp that fled civilization to return to the wild.
But it’s not just about fish. It’s the riverbanks where kingfishers nest. It’s the trees falling into the water to shelter crayfish, salamanders, and rare predators. It’s the old tracks of beavers and the soft burrows dug into muddy banks.
These are stories you can’t write down. Only live.
Two Reservoirs – Two Faces
Mohelno and Dalešice. Two monuments that reshape the river — but do not destroy it. The first is frozen in time – around Mohelno, you’ll find one of the most precious serpentine steppes in Europe. It’s another world. Rocks glowing under the sun. Plants that grow nowhere else. A silence you don’t just hear — you feel. But deep beneath it all, in the water, wait fish that have known eternity.
Dalešice are different. More modern. But even here, there’s room for the angler who knows where to go. Depth. Silence. And the chance that right here – beneath this very surface – you’ll encounter the fish that changes your entire season.
An expedition that begins
This project wasn’t created as a map for tourists. Nor as a fishing guide. For us, the Jihlava River is not just a location – it’s a challenge. To explore. To capture. To become part of its flow, even if just for a moment.
We’re preparing a series that will follow the current – and sometimes go against it. Reports. Journeys. Places you know. And places you’ve never heard of. You might discover that the most valuable thing isn’t the trophy – but the return. To silence. To nature. To yourself.
And maybe it will become your river too.
